{"id":908,"date":"2011-09-26T16:03:56","date_gmt":"2011-09-26T09:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/?p=908"},"modified":"2023-06-13T14:59:04","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T07:59:04","slug":"vr-museum-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/index.php\/2011\/09\/vr-museum-opens\/","title":{"rendered":"VR Museum Opens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The VR Museum at the <a title=\"King Power website\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kingpower.com\/vrMuseum\" target=\"_blank\">King Power Complex<\/a> is now open to the public.\u00a0 It is named after founder Vichai Raksriaksorn and contains one of the most comprehensive collections of classical Buddhist art in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inaugural exhibition is titled &#8220;Journey of the Buddha&#8221;.&nbsp; The exhibition includes Buddha statues from the 2nd to 12th centuries,&nbsp; such as from the <a title=\"Gandhara Buddhism New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/08\/12\/arts\/design\/the-buddhist-heritage-of-pakistan-art-of-gandhara-at-asia-society-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gandhara<\/a>, <a title=\"Dvaravati Buddhism Metropolitan Museum of Art\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/mond\/hd_mond.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dvaravati<\/a>, Srivijaya and Lopburi <a title=\"Wikipedia link Buddha Images\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddha_images_in_Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">periods<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Buddha-statue-VR-Museum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"427\" src=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Buddha-statue-VR-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-916\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum is comprised of several gallery spaces placed along a linear sequence.&nbsp; One can observe how the image and portrayal of Buddha has evolved over time.&nbsp; The photograph below shows the gallery containing Buddha images&nbsp;from the Sukhothai and&nbsp;Ayutthaya periods (14th to 18th centuries).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Gallery-3-VR-Museum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"421\" src=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Gallery-3-VR-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-925\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition design is by <a title=\"DesignLAB website\" href=\"http:\/\/designlab.co.th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DesignLAB<\/a> and lighting design by <a title=\"APLD Lighting design\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aplddesign.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APLD<\/a>. The exhibit features an audio guide for visitors, as well as interactive displays for the viewing the amulets, the highlight being the &#8220;Great Quintet&#8221; &#8211; five tablets crafted by Thai monks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-exhibit-courtesy-Nation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"479\" src=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-exhibit-courtesy-Nation.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-exhibit-courtesy-Nation.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-exhibit-courtesy-Nation-330x220.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the architecture, Architectkidd designed the displays embedded in the &#8220;Public Wall&#8221;.&nbsp; They contain a collection of miniature figures of the Hindu Ganesha and Vishnu, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva from Mahayana Buddhism, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-architectkidd-Bangkokpost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"239\" src=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VR-Museum-architectkidd-Bangkokpost.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-912\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent article in the Nation newspaper provides more information about the statues in the various galleries and their historical significance <a title=\"The Nation VR Museum August 2011\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationmultimedia.com\/2011\/08\/14\/life\/Presence-of-the-Lord-30162638.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.&nbsp; There is also an image gallery of the exhibition <a title=\"Nation facebook image gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.235637886479461.57393.206443092732274&amp;type=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the <a title=\"Bangkok Post August 2 2011\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/lifestyle\/family\/249882\/fascinating-and-beautiful-buddhist-imagery-on-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangkok Post<\/a> and the <a title=\"Thailand Tatler magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thailandtatler.com\/the-magpie-tendency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand Tatler<\/a> have also reported on the VR Museum and its collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously we have shown the construction progress <a title=\"VR Museum process\" href=\"http:\/\/www.architectkidd.com\/index.php\/2010\/04\/deep-patterns\/\">here<\/a>.
