Pleated Walls

In a recent retail design, Architectkidd conceived of pleated surfaces on all the walls of the interior space.  Continuing our interest in materials and finishes, we found that pleated walls can be applied to spaces to create dynamic, textured surfaces.

The folded nature of the pleats add subtle visual depth and a sense of movement. Pleating can be achieved using various materials such as wood, metal, or plaster, but in end we looked to paper for its versatility in this application.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, pleated walls can serve some functional purposes. Folds can enhance acoustics by diffusing sound, and flow along curved walls and surfaces. They can also diffuse light, with shadows shifting and adding to the ambiance of a space.

For Architectkidd, pleated walls offer the opportunity to blend form and function, transforming plain surfaces into features that elevate the overall design and enhance the retail space.
